A) give Tavares a bit more freedom to just be himself; the previous management team had to talk John through how to be more inclusive; man just wants to red light his balls in peace, not organize coffee brunches

B) Matthews was the one everyone was looking to on the ice anyway

C) contract status coming into this year: Matthews committed (ish), Tavares on his final year of the current deal
