Phoenix Trade up to #1?

Does anyone out there in rumor-land envision a scenario where Toronto shops the #1 pick to Phoenix? If so, what do you think would be a fair exchange?

Very unlikely to happen. Even with really high picks or prospects coming back, Matthews will be the best player available  (or Laine even) and the Leafs won't be giving that up.

It would have to be a huge package for Leafs to trade down from 1 to 7. Something like 2 or 3 prospects, the 7th overall and Arizona's first next year.

Don't think the Leafs would do it though, the chance at drafting your own high end #1 center doesn't come along every year, just look at how long the Leafs have tried to find that guy.

Pheonix will not be gutting their team for Matthews and unless there's a McDavid coming back, I don't see the Leafs trading him away.

I brought this subject up a few weeks ago about the idea of making the #1 pick to Phoenix for a boatload of prospects and 1st rounders coming back, however Nik put down the idea and the conversation went nowhere after that.

How about the Leafs offering Matthew + Gardiner + Pittsburgh's 1st to Edmonton for McDavid?  Would Edmonton go for it? They are going to lose McDavid to the Leafs in 6 years anyway (lol)  ;D

Would the Leafs also provide the rope to the Oilers for the lynching that would ensue for the management team ? Lol

As a Leaf fan I would be more than happy to trade the number 1 pick and Gardiner for OEL and Strome.

There is no deal that makes sense for Phoenix that would entice the Leafs to move the pick. Period.
Yeah it would set the franchise back. Only way I could see a deal was if the Leafs thought Laine was their man and Arizona was in the #2 spot. Leafs could trade for an asset from Arizona + #2 overall and still get Laine, no way they go all the way down to 7 unless they totally gut Arizona.

Wow what are you smoking?  OEL is not twice as good as Gardiner and Strome will be good, he's not close to Matthews IMO.

You really should watch some Western conference games.  OEL is top 10 in League and would be our best D man by a significant margin.

Still not enough, why would you give Arizona anything but the #1 pick? They're the team that would desperately want it. The optics of the Leafs trading the #1 overall would be terrible after all the pain of the last 2 seasons. It would have to be a slam dunk deal for it to happen.

Alright Domi as well, does that work??

I know you guys don't get to see him much but OEL is an absolute stud.

I'm not arguing that OEL isn't good.  He's probably very good, but he's played in the obscurity of Arizona where his mistakes probably weren't even noticed except by maybe his coach.  If OEL sneezed the wrong way in Toronto, it would be headline news.  So just because he works out in AZ, doesn't mean he'd work out in Toronto.  You can say the same about Matthews but at this point I and probably the rest of Leafs Nation would rather take a chance at developing Matthews than bring in OEL and Strome.

Prior to the lottery I said I'd entertain the idea of potentially trading the 1st overall pick assuming the return was ridiculous. Now that we have it though, you'd have to pry it out of my cold dead hands.
