Phaneuf to Oilers (fair warning - it's Eklund)

I know it's the equivalent of tabloid journalism but Eklund is suggesting the Oilers are looking for a big name D-man and may be looking at Phaneuf.  His speculated return is Sam Gagner.  Out of curiousity mixed with the absurd chance that Eklund gets something right... say these two names are involved.  What else may need to be added in order to also flip the 21 for the 7 and have a chance at someone like Monahan or Nichushkin?

There was a rumour that Phaneuf might be available for the right price, and a separate rumour that the Leafs were talking to Edmonton about Gagner. In a stroke of genius Eklund put the two together.

I have no interest in Gagner. If we're looking at somebody like that for Phil we may as well just go with Kadri.

I'd buy the Leafs dealing Phaneuf if the piece coming back was something like Bogosian or McDonogh or Hedman but for a guy like Gagner who doesn't really address any particular need?

I like Gagner, but that's a huge hole on defense to fill. Very unlikely trade.

If what Carlton is saying is true, I'm still trying to figure out why Phaneuf would be on the market. I mean, maybe he'll walk as a free agent, but for what he brings to the team, I find it unlikely that the Leafs won't lock him up this season.

To clarify, this is what Dreger said about Phaneuf earlier today:

Some rumblings Phaneuf may be in play. Nonis says he will trade just about anyone, but says no one has called on the captain...yet. #TSN

Nothing out of the ordinary, just the old nobody is untouchable sort of thing.

Ok, Nonis' poker face. I'm actually thinking the Leafs end up signing him on a better cap hit than he's on right now for a longer term. If Phaneuf does go in trade, it would have to be for a piece like Nik was just saying, a younger version of a similar player.

If Pheneuf or anyone he knows has the internet and actually reads anything on it I have no problem understanding why he would welcome a trade from the Leafs.  He is bashed for every play he tries to make.

The Leafs trading Phanuef is the single dumbest idea I've ever heard pertaining to this team. (Okay, maybe not as bad as trading Kessel, but it's close).

Fans hate this guy because they see his sometimes glaring mistakes and ignore how solid he is overall. This team doesn't make the playoffs without Phaneuf. He's not going anywhere, especially for Ganger.

Nothing to see here. Carry on.

Rip Eklund all you want but I think I read somewhere he has a 2.3% success rate. There's a chance!

For what its worth, Sportsnet is reporting the Leafs are kicking the tires on Gagner.

Adrian Dater is projecting that rumbling into a Phaneuf for Stastny situation, fwiw.

That would be a huge mistake IMO. We'd have nobody close to a #1D and a questionable #1C who's been on the decline and is very overpriced.

Unless Colorado is moving other pieces and good picks that's a terrible trade.

I agree. But if they can trade Phaneuf for Stastny and then trade Grabovski+ for a replacement top 4 defenseman, I could live with that. Will be tough to find someone to replace Phaneuf though.

I'd be sad to see Grabovski go, but I'm a really big fan of Stastny.

I don't see that happening at all.  You could argue both are somewhat overpaid but I think Phaneuf's value to Toronto is far higher than Stastny's is to Colorado.  I would think the Avs want to get younger to line with the rest of their group of players vs. taking on Phaneuf.

I have to admit, Phaneuf in Edmonton makes a lot of sense.  I'm just not sure Mac-T puts together enough of an offer to convince the Leafs to move him.  Let's face it, Hall, Eberle, Nugent-Hopkins, and Yakupov aren't going anywhere.  I don't think players like Gagner or Hemsky are appealing to the Leafs, at least not as a return for their captain.

For the 7'th overall pick?  Hmmmmm.....

You could definitely argue that however Phaneuf as a 30-40 pt D man good for between 8-12 goals @ 6.5M is a heck of a lot better than Stastny as a 50 pt #1C making 6.6M and putting up around 20G.

I don't think Colorado cares if all the players on their team are young. If the deal was a straight up swap, I think they'd be on it in a heartbeat. Hopefully Nonis isn't foolish enough to even consider it.
