Leafs acquire and extend Kirill Marchenko

I think Marchenko was a good pick-up, but it’s going to take a sacrifice to beef up the defence in any substantial way. What do we think about a possible trade of Kirill Marchenko for Simon Edvinsson ?

He is unprotected for the remaining of this season , after which his trade protection kicks in.
This seems very unlikely to me. I think they probably dump Colorado's first rounder and maybe a prospect for something closer to the deadline.

The timing would seem to depend on Tanev's anticipated recovery timeline (or other injuries to dmen) and how well they can pick up the slack with their other dmen or AHLers.

I wouldn't overthink it; just hold as steady as possible until Danford is good to go and bring him up. If he is not ready for even 3rd pair minutes, then we can explore the market. In the meantime, give the other Marlie options some run to see what they can offer; Gruden is already very familiar with their respective strengths.

I'm interested in seeing Rifai again. He isn't flashy, but he's pretty steady and tough as nails. He seems a little loco.

I would consider trading Marchenko for the right Defenseman.

When they traded Knies for a winger, I was confused.

This team stunk without Tanev's 20 minutes last year. This is bad.

Yes, but this team isn't being coached to play the same way, which I think makes a big difference in the equation. Obviously having Tanev would be better than not, but the aim of the team is to NOT spend every shift giving the puck to the other team with time and space to build up speed.
