Its the regular season so technically who cares but ummm...we have lots of injuries.
 
Interesting lineup for tonight! Minten was definitely not ready last year, will things be any different this time? Grebenkin is the one I really want to see in action - he looked very good in preseason, looks like he can play the Berube game and has some skill to go along with it. I thought he looked quite lost in the defensive zone so that will be something to keep an eye on. Someone brought up Alex Nylander. I think the fact the Leafs have chosen to bring up two very raw younger guys, along with the fact they keep playing Nick Robertson and his 1 point in 16 games, is a clear indication where they view Nylander in the pecking order. Maybe he's next if someone else goes down, but I just didn't see anything I liked from him in preseason.

Woll is an interesting choice, thought they'd go with the guy who has been better overall especially with the depleted lineup.

Nylander wouldn't need to clear waivers to come up to the NHL but would need them to go back to the AHL. Unless a guy like Minten knocks the Leafs socks off, Steeves/Grebenkin/Minten are all likely going back to the AHL when guys are healthy.

If the Leafs plan to use Nylander Jr at some point this year, it's going to be later in the year when they plan on bringing him up and keeping him in the NHL.

Also, as things stand right now, he's not even an option. He's signed to an AHL deal, not an NHL one. Sure, that's easy enough to work out, but, until that happens, he's not even in the pecking order.

I'm sure he's in the "pecking order", if the right injury or injuries were to happen. We just don't know where in the order. Could well be next in line. Say the inevitable Bobby McMann injury happens soon (I held my breath when he slammed into the boards after that goal the other night), or Marner or Wille get hurt. They'll sign Alex quickly if they view him as a potentially useful player. Who else is there down there that might be a scoring option...pretty much no one. Maybe Cowan is next in line.

Cowan is ineligible to be called up, outside of extreme short-term emergency situations - basically, if he's the only healthy player that can get to the team in time for the next game. He's not in line at all.

As for the pecking order on the Marlies, Quillan, Hirvonen, Tverberg, Kresller, Abruzzese, Voit, and Pare can all be brought up without the Leafs using up a spot on their reserve list. Unless there's a long-term fit for Nylander on the NHL roster, the team almost certainly takes the path of least resistance for short-term injury replacements. Essentially, not in the pecking order.

Once you get loaned to the CHL, you're in the CHL until your team's season is done.

Alex hasn't been good, other than scoring the occasional goal (their last OT winner). He hasn't pushed the front office to the point of doing the whole sign an NHL deal song and dance and all the additional inconvenience to the cap/reserve list that entails. I think this front office is looking for a certain floor value to even qualify for a call up.

He's really not. He's won 3 of his last 4 and allowed 8 goals. Leafs are going to need both goalies here and his last start was a week ago. Stolarz will also get a full week off when he plays Sunday.

At this point, I don't see him getting an NHL deal until close to/after the deadline. If the Leafs still have open reserve list spots at that point, I can see them getting him inked to a league minimum deal just to have him as potential extended depth for the playoffs. Until then, he's not getting a deal unless he plays well enough to earn a more significant spot on the roster (which, feels unlikely at this point - and would also be weeks away from coming to fruition).

Probably a product of having a lot of players 30ish or more.
We and management had to know this was likely. It did get said here in September.
They probably have to try to make it happen for this roster in the next couple of years because its all down hill from there on a number of those contracts.
