Last time Hamilton was traded:
Calgary acquired defenseman Dougie Hamilton from the Boston Bruins in a trade for their first-round pick (No. 15) in the 2015 NHL Draft and the two second-round picks (Nos. 45 and 52) they previously acquired from the Washington Capitals.

He's currently 23 at 5.75M until 2020-21.

What are our chances?

I doubt they get close to what they paid for him.

He is underperforming, teams will be attracted by his upside, but I'm not sure he's worth that contract.

Carleton brought this up in a gdt. From the article, it speculates Kapenen and picks, or Kadri... I'm fine with the former depending on the picks, but it's hard to gauge where the Flames think they are in the rebuilding process. My guess is they wouldn't be moving a guy like Hamilton unless they were getting a young impact player back that can play right now, and I don't think the leafs have one I'd be willing to offer, apart perhaps Brown, and that wouldn't do it on its own.

Obviously if he's available that's a smart avenue to investigate but I tend to agree with McGarnagle and would even take it a step further. I know we probably think it's nuts but I think on just about any trade call the Leafs make right now the answer is going to be "Matthews, Marner or Nylander".

Which isn't to say that would be the team's only avenue to make trades but I think any offer that doesn't include one of those three guys is going to draw the response of the other team shopping around to see if they can do better.

I have a hard time believing that he's on the block...he'd leave a gaping hole there, and it's go-time for Calgary.

Slim to none with what the Leafs are likely willing to give up. The Leafs could use his point shot, size, overall ability and fit on the defence pairings. I don't see that as a problem contract at all.

I'd be more willing to wait out the Trouba situation than pony up for Hamilton at the moment, if Calgary is actually entertaining offers. The impending expansion draft will likely shake loose some more options to work with beyond these two.

I don't doubt that teams are calling (circling vultures and all that), but Hamilton is more part of their solution on the roster, rather than as an asset transaction.

Dubas and another scout took in the CGY@BUF game the other day, followed by Treliving at the ACC when the Caps were in town. Last night, head of pro scouting Dave Morrison caught the CGY@PHI game.

We are playing Calgary on Wednesday.

The Leafs have three 2nd round picks this year.

JVR, Corrado/Polak/Hunwick/Marincin and 2 2nd's?

I think one of those seconds is already going to Anaheim from the Andersen deal(the middle one).

So you can deal the other two, just that it leaves the Leafs with none.

I think if JVR goes then Bozak is likely done by the deadline too.

I don't think it's ambitious to think they could get a 2nd and 3rd or more for him, that would give them a full compliment again. Perhaps JVR, dman and a 2nd gets it done. They have a lot of prospect wingers that could sweeten the pot too.

The thing about recouping the pick is that I'd think Calgary would want the better of the two remaining picks and you tend not to get picks from bottom third teams at the deadline so you could be talking about "replacing" a pick that is in the 30's with one in the 50's.

That said, I think Hamilton is a valuable enough piece that if you could do JVR, Carrick and a 2nd(+ maybe a C sort of prospect) I'd probably do it and figure out draft picks later.

If they could make this deal without trading Carrick they could protect 8 skaters instead of 7F and 3D.

Protect: Kadri, Bozak, Brown, Leipsec, Rielly, Gardiner, Hamilton and Carrick.

Leaving Komarov, Martin, Leivo, Rychel and Marincin exposed. I don't think losing any one of those guys is a problem.

We could potentially run a D of:

Rielly-Zaitsev
Gardiner-Hamilton
Someone-Carrick

Looks pretty good on paper.

Does JVR as the main piece going back make sense for Calgary though?

I wondered that myself. I think that's sort of a function of if not JVR, who? Nylander or maybe Kadri seems to be the only other options and I think those would give more people pause.

Brian Burke was on TSN today ranting and raving about the media, and about teams leaking false information. He said a team called him and inquired about Hamilton, and then made an insulting offer. That team then apparently leaked the offer to the media. Burke threatened to out the team if they keep it up, and said he would consider trading Hamilton if a team offered him 20 first-round picks. Typical Burke bluster.

We need a great defender, but I think that might be too much for Hamilton.

So I'm out on Hamilton at that number.
