2014/2015 - NFL Season - Manziel, Manziel, Manziel, Manziel

Were getting closer to the start of the 2014/2015 season.  ESPN is in full time Johnn Manziel mode.  He's going to be the backup to Brian Hoyer to start the year until Cleveland remembers that he's a really below average QB.

This might be Peyton Manning's last NFL season.  He's looked good in the preseason so who knows.

The Raiders still suck....

This story caught my eye today. Retired NFL referee revealed he'd specifically asked not to work Washington games because of the team's nickname:

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/11381298/mike-carey-asked-washington-redskins-games-due-nickname

So, to sum it up, some of the things working against keeping the name are:

- Multiple news outlets and now even some announcers are saying they won't refer to the team's nickname in print or on air.
- Having to fight to maintain the team's trademark in court because the law says you can't trademark a racial slur.
- The American Psychiatric Association saying that it causes legitimate harm to people.
- Ad campaigns from various tribes.
- Having veteran officials not want to work the games

and on the other side:

- "Tradition"

Obviously I'm more a casual observer of the NFL, but I watched that Ray Rice video that surfaced and holy crap - it's godawful.

He's just been released by the Ravens, but everyone involved - Rice, the NFL, the Ravens - look terrible in this.

The video TMZ posted basically shamed the Ravens into releasing him, probably the only positive thing TMZ has done for this world.

Depending on who you believe the NFL front office probably had access to that video when they made the 2 game suspension ruling.

Considering that player ( can't remember his name )  smokes some pot and got a full year suspended, I would hope that the NFL finally removed their heads from their asses and came down on Rice like a ton of bricks. I'm glad the CFL upholds the suspension as well.

The DA also dropped the ball by only charging Rice with 3rd degree assault rather then throwing the book at him while having to decide if his now wife should be charged with anything...I don't get that at all. Just more proof to the masses that if you are rich you can buy your way out of trouble. Set a damn example is what we need to do.

They could have gotten the video in a more timely fashion and not let a rag like TMZ show up investigators either.
If this tape existed and the NFL knew about it and did not turn it over that is just despicable.

The fact that Rice's record will now be expunged after 1 year is a fricking joke as well.

Consequences are a bitch after all.

The AP is now reporting exactly that:

Also, a new study just came out saying that football players are four times more likely to die from ALS or Alzheimer's than the general population.

NFL Football!

And yet he gets to play again because the Vikings got blown out.
Wins > Image and Morality

Big player = different rules as usual it seems sadly.
Beating a 4 year old child is disgusting, those pictures of his son speak volumes. Not to mention that he has a previous charge for child abuse as well.

The fact that he tried to explain it by saying it was how he was raised... is a farce.

Released from his contract and suspended indefinitely at the very least is what should happen.
Make a lasting statement and let these guys know that the privilege of making millions playing a game is just that. A privilege and not a right.

I think the hysteria around this is absolutely terrifying.  Money should have nothing to do with the situation.  Every day people make the same mistake that this man has made, half the time nobody lifts a finger to help those kids.  He did it out of ignorance not malice.  Do you think about child labour laws when you buy your clothing?  There is absolutely nothing in your closet that you have done out of ignorance and regretted it?  Would you like it to be world news and have your future earnings be threatened by it?  Yes he make lots of money.  So what. What does that have to do about learning to be better person.  He made a mistake.  Education is what he needs, not ridicule...  People seem to think that being wealthy somehow makes you immune to your own flaws and that you are not allowed to be sad, or unhappy because 'your rich and don't have to struggle to get by'.  Good job people way to go after the low hanging fruit.  What have you done to tackle child abuse in your own back yard/neighbourhood...

Are you really being that obtuse?

He is a high profile athlete...weather he likes it or not he is a role model and example for lots of kids. He has a prior charge in a different state for child abuse as well. This is not an isolated incident.  He needs to be punished and made an example of so that maybe just maybe it makes even one person not raise a hand against a child.

And fyi...yes I am conscious of where and what I buy and how it is made. Mostly local products as a matter of fact. Its a personal choice to not support people who get rich at others expense.

I myself was abused quite badly when I was a kid. 8 layers of leather belt wrapped In electric tape. I have been volunteering and counseling abused kids for quite some time now but that doesn't make my cry of indignation at this crime any stronger or weaker. The cries of abused children would drown out my shouts.

Those injuries were NOT accidental..jesus man its a 4 year old child he whipped stuffed leaves in his mouth to keep him quiet and threatened him with more violence if he didnt keep quiet. He even has a special "whoopinh room" If I saw him doing that in person id break his neck with my bare hands. Who the ☆☆☆☆ beats a 4 year old to punish them? Sadists and psycho's thats who.

If some average joe did this to a 4 year old child it would be all over the media and they would be locked up waiting on a court date...why should some rich sports star be different?

You do the crime you better be prepared to do the time and you dont get to say what people can and cannot say about you then.

Actions = consequences no matter how effin rich you are. The fact that you defend him is mind bogglingly horrifying and disgusting.

As for the role model, it's not what they get paid for and it's not what they do.  They play football for money.  There are some out there that would be criminals if football wasn't the outlet.  Why should they be punished for being good at football.  It's the general public that projects the perfect image on to these athletes.  Is this why the public reacts becomes so volatile? because the projected image is shattered by their mistakes.

Average joe's do this every day and we don't hear of it.

Agreed on the other points though.  Do the crime do the time.  A fine plus community service, councelling and monitoring by CPS.  Thats what most first timers get.

Consequences should be the same for everyone no matter how effin rich you are.

Thats part of being in the public eye...he didnt ask to be a "role model" but as someone who has kids looking up to him beause of his job he needs to be even more aware of his every action.  Like it or not its a fact of life.

And I dont know where you live but threatening, gagging and flogging a 4 yr old... is unacceptable.  A 4 yr old has no idea of why they are being hit or "punished" let alone understand why the person they love unconditionally could harm them.

As for the "public image" it needs to be smashed and set straight. If some random joe locked up, gagged and flogged his 4 year old it would be on cbc, cnn etc in a heartbeat. We as society are simply not hard enough to set an example and change people's mindsets on this unacceptable behavior.

And no community service or useless 10k fines... jail time, mandatory counselling and honestly the loss of his iob is the only way to make a point.
