2025-26 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Hopefully, they can find a GM with the DNA of having won something in his hockey career.
I place the most blame for where this team finds itself on Treliving.
It wouldn't surprise me if this is his last stop as a GM in this league.
 
So OEL is still here.

I propose Tre fires Berube and names Lalonde. Then Pelley fires Tre. Then Lalonde walks into the dressing room, rips the C off of Matthews, and gives it to OEL to "kick start a real culture change with this group."

That'll show everybody.

I am going to have to pass on Uncle Fester. Berube is tracking towards top 5 pick, so maybe we let him do his thing.
 
So I'm not fan of Treliving but

On the Laughton deal, like the McMann deal, all he has to do is read the email or listen to the phone calls.
Then sell to the highest bidder.
What they got for Laughton was probably the highest bid. So I'm not going to clobber him for that.
I would have taken the highest bid for OEL because he turns 35 this summer and there is a high risk that he is not going to be what he was this season next year. (we still have an hour of two for a last trickle of trades ..)

Leafs just need another year to become more familiar with Berube-style hockey. They'll be dumping in pucks on breakaways in no time!

I don't know. If we're not a contender, why keep anyone +35?

No doubt we will be better with a new coach and system, but we're miles from winning anything. You need to make some crazy trade like Nylander and Knies for Tkachuk and Sanderson to change the direction of this team. Why can't one line play dump and chase and another not?

I'm not mad at him taking what he could get. I'm mad at the price we paid for him in the first place. This is so bad optically.

Yep.
He took a 4th place team in the NHL last year and turned it into a 25th place team (& probably falling) this year.
Spent max money and a hunk of what little they had left in assets to get there.
Fraser Minten has a better shot at a Cup than the Leafs do. So does Mitch Marner

If Rielly goes this summer (as I hope) and OEL doesn't drop off too much maybe you think about extending him. Now having said that, we need some younger puckmovers on D very badly.
 
I'll give Tre credit: he takes responsibility for the failed season in his remarks today. He also kept saying we'll look at everything at the end of the season including Berube. I think he left the door wide open for both himself and Berube to be canned.

Treliving has been supportive and defensive of Berube. He'll sprinkle the blame around some and I don't think that's unfair. Team sport. Team loss. But he's said a few times this season that he has to take responsibility. I think he realizes it is pretty hard to look at it any other way.
