I think McMann helps that because he's good at takeaways - with his speed & forechecking and work on the boards. He finishes his checks and helps the line get or maintain possession of the puck. Nylander will always be a liability at times.
McMann also has the speed and willingness to backcheck. I'm not crazy about his reads and anticipation there nor his shot blocking. But he's handily got the best +/- among the forwards and that is in spite of the fact it got diminished playing with Domi and Robertson. We all should know by now the story with Domi this season - but it has improved some lately. Robertson has made a truly commendable, consistent effort this season to round out his game and has improved but he also has had some significant costly defensive gaffes this season.
When he was healthy, McMann was also very good with Tavares and Marner which to me was a stronger line defensively - for the obvious reason: Marner v Nylander.

McMann helped the 3rd line. Laughton, Jarnkrok, Pacioretty, Holmberg, Kampf - someone needs to grab the baton there or help the 2nd line to free up McMann.

Further on this.... if Domi didn't score.... Laughton would have finished a dash one in a 6 to 2 game.

No points and no SOGs on a night EVERY Leaf player got a point or SOG except Tanev and Laughton. Oooffff.
 
If this keeps up they really need to give Laughton a shot on one of the top two lines , just to get him out of this funk. I’m kinda surprised they haven’t tried that yet tbh.

I think he'll be fine. He's probably a little shook playing for his childhood favourite hometown team. I would pee my pants every time I stepped out onto the ice wearing that sweater.
