Lot of money/term for a 32 year old but Backstrom is pretty durable. Only played fewer than 75 games in a full season once.

Also, and this came as a bit of a shocker to me, but he's almost at this point a 100% guaranteed lock of a hall of famer. If he averages even 50 points a year over this new deal he'll retire with around 1200. Stanley Cup(and good playoff scoring numbers), Olympic Silver, multiple World Championships...probably the most underrated player of his generation.
 
He'll be 33 next November. I guess I just figured this would come in a little lower considering his age and his connection to the team.

Next question will be can they re-sign Holtby, or do they even want to?

His current/expiring contract is also probably one of the best we've seen. 10 years with a $6.7mil AAV. This was signed immediately after his ELC too where he scored 69, 88, and 101 points.

Looking at Capfriendly I also noticed that his cap percentage was 11.28% for that contract. This contract has a percentage of 11.29%. I'm assuming that's not a coincidence. Backstrom also didn't use his agent for this deal IIRC.

Yeah, he's been in OV's shadow for his entire career so people forget just how vital he has been, not only to OV's HoF career but also to the team's. When you think of elite centers your mind doesn't immediately jump to him vs some of his contemporaries (Crosby, Malkin, Bergeron, Getzlaf?) but he ought to be in that same conversation. In my mind he should be a lock to be a 1st ballot Hall entry.

That's a steep price for him, but at least he's signing it at age <35 so if he starts to fade towards the end of it and they need to buy him out or he retires, they won't be on the hook for his cap hit. I wonder if the deal is heavily front-loaded.

I'm guessing it was sort of the other way around. They've had him for a decade on one of the more team-friendly deals in the league, now they maybe go a bit over so he finishes his career there.

I was thinking more about the kind of recapture penalty they might be assessed. It looks like it's spread out not too horribly so if he retired any time after year 3 it wouldn't be excessively painful. If he didn't play year 3 the recapture might be nasty.

Recapture penalties only effect contracts 6 years or longer, so it wouldn't apply here. Even if it did, Backstrom would 100% just stub his toe or something and go on LTIR before retiring and screwing over the Caps.

Oh, I hadn't realized that shorter contracts weren't subject to it.
 
This doesn't sound like much negotiation really took place, just two parties very happy with continuing the relationship as long as it was foreseeably feasible.

It also only impacts contracts signed under the previous CBA. No contracts signed after Sept 15, 2012 trigger it.
