Matheson traded to Pittsburgh for Hornqvist

I'm hesitant to post this as none of the other "big" names have confirmed it and it almost seems too bad for Pittsburgh to believe but then again Rutherford...

Pierre LeBrun less than 2 years ago talking about a potential Nylander to Florida trade: "Presumably the Leafs would want the package to start with defenceman Michael Matheson. "Not a chance," one source said Tuesday when asked about Florida moving Matheson."

Is Matheson that bad?  Not sure Pitt even needs more LD but Hornqvist is 33 gets 5.3 for 3 more years. Matheson 4.875 for 6. If true maybe a bigger trade coming? Rutherford said there will be changes.

Even if he's not necessarily the worst defenceman in the league it's hard to see him as anything more than a 4-5 guy (who at times was a healthy scratch). That has to make his contract, 8 years at $4.875mil with 6 years remaining, one of the worst long-term ones left in the league.

Matheson is, once again, one of those 'which team do you play for' kind of defensemen.

Like a Zaitsev situation: they signed him long term (which we lol'd at back then) to ostensibly play with Ekblad, but was so bad that they had to use Weegar, a right shot, to play top minutes.

Now Rutherford has Matheson to draw fan ire from Jack Johnson, I guess.

I didn't realize that Hornqvist played at a 25-goal, 50-point pace this season. Maybe his skating is getting a little worse and he's poised to slow down but that still seems like useful production even if it's just coming from the powerplay.

That's brutal

Thx.

Matheson showed some potential in his first couple years in the league, but he has definitely not developed from there.

Hornqvist is on the decline, but still has some short-term value.

I'd call this a classic lose-lose - both teams get guys who will probably be cap albatrosses before their contracts finish, and will almost certainly struggle to live up to their value up to that point. Slight edge to Florida for picking up a shorter, but more expensive, contract.

I kind of like this idea. It's clear his instincts for neutralizing attacks is wonky, but he's got the build and wherewithal to be a pretty decent displacement forward. His shooting percentage is also relatively high for a defenseman so I think he could be someone you could just throw pucks at for chaos jam goals.

If he never answers his phone, he can't be traded.

Worked for Big Buff.
Well wouldn't he know the teams before making the trade? I think the agent saw the tweet or whatever and called Jimmy boy and said hold on a minute here.

Ok, so I love that video.  ;D

Insurance on contracts isn't a joke.  With how these franchises are leveraged, insurance is not optional most of the time.  It's got to be there to release the funds.
