Josi signs 8-year contract extension with Nashville

Josi's current contract doesn't get talked about enough when it comes to the best deals in the league. He's in the final season of a 7-year deal that carried an AAV of $4mil. Now he's getting paid.

This contract doesn't start until Josi is 30. So while I guess it's good value now(Josi is maybe a top 5 defenseman?) I don't know how excited I'd be to have anyone from 36-38 at this kind of money.

Can we talk about how teams get better value on their contracts than the Leafs?

I think that any sort of conversation in that regard might be productive to have if people didn't only come to it with "Kyle Dubas is stupid and/or bad at negotiating" or whatever.

Josi is a top pair D man. Good value if he can maintain.
Here's a little blurb I found...

The seventh captain in Predators franchise history ranks third in shots, fourth in points, fifth in ice-time, and seventh in blocked shots among all defencemen since his current contract kicked in more than six years ago.

Norris and AS voting aren't perfect but his finishes the last five years in Norris voting have been 5, 5, 11, 7, 7 and his AS voting was 5, 5, 10, 7 ,7. That seems like a reasonable reflection of him and where he ranks. One of the 10 or so better defensemen in the league but never a real serious Norris contender.

So is it a good value deal? Well, by using fair standards I suppose so. It's too long a deal for a guy of his age but there's nothing egregious about it. He'd been drastically underpaid for years, now he's getting his.

If, however, we're using the standards people used to to beat up on the Leafs for the deals they signed? Well, if Marner didn't "deserve" more money than Kucherov then there's no way Josi "deserves" more money than Hedman.

Not really specific to this deal, but I'm wondering how the NHL's non-elite are feeling about these big $7m+ deals signed over the past few months.

I was interested to see that the NHLPA didn't open up the CBA, because I had a theory that there may not be a palate for a work stoppage with so many guys working for less than $1m these days with the cap being kind of stagnant over the past season.

Josi got a higher cap % than Hedman did. It's the exact same principle. It makes sense within the larger context of the league but it shows why the 1 to 1 comparisons to Tampa players were so intellectually dishonest.

Hedman signed 4 seasons earlier than Josi. Kucherov sign one year before Marner. Slight difference.

Hedman also signed when he was 25.  He's getting paid for 5 prime years and 3 over 30 years, where some decline is expected.  Josi will be 30 when this contract kicks in.  All 8 years are for a 30+ years.

Kucherov signed when he was 25 but the deal didn't kick in until he was 26.  Paying for 4 prime years and 4 years over 30.  Marner's contract will be within his 20's the entire time.  I'm not saying the Marner contract is good, btw, just adding context regarding whether these guys will perform to the level of their contract throughout it.

I do think the Josi contract is not going to age well, but I bet Nashville is fine with that because someone would have paid him that contract anyways and they feel they need to compete now and worry about this looking bad later.
