You hate to see a veteran player blindsided by a trade that sends him from somewhere him and his family seemed to genuinely love to a city/team like Buffalo... except when it's a Staal lol

There has to be a reason, but why does Guerin do this?

Both 1 year left on their deals, Staal is cheaper, was more productive last year...yea, I don't understand it either..

Seriously...I have to think he could get a better return than Johansson.

Maybe Staal pissed him off.

I mean so did Buffalo and it didn't work then... but yeah I'm sure it will there.

He's the best centre they could get for Staal?  Come on.

It's a weird return and I don't think much of Johansson but I wouldn't burn too many brain cells trying to figure out why a team might want to move on from a 36 year old who seems to be declining.

Johnasson might be younger but if anything he seems to be showing more signs of declining than Staal is.

Sure. Guerin may absolutely 100% be wrong about which guy is a better bet for next year but that's true of every trade more or less.

This is a trade that happened. For some reason. I don?t really understand it for either team. Just feels like they swapped pieces they could use for more of what they have.

What really needs to be reported on is how many GMs were angry that they didn't get a chance to be in on this deal.

From some of the talking head chatter, the Sabres wanted Staal for a bit of veteran leadership on a club that has had some issues in that regard.

But since there's not an analytical argument that we can tie to this move, we'll just be mystified by it.

I mean I think most people are confused about this trade from a Minnesota perspective. Buffalo got a better and cheaper player, it was a good move on their part. I think the only concern is will Staal be motivated to play there.

edit: I'll downgrade that to good-ish because I do think there's a legit concern about this trade blindsiding Staal and that hurting his play next season

Staal is still decent production, but he's 36 before the season kicks off.  He could drop off a cliff at any time.
