I was at the game tonight. I was most pleased by Macelli. With Nylander out, he looked like the leafs best transition player. He successfully skated and passed the puck up the ice consistently last night.

An issue with mental health is not a possibility I had thought of but it would make sense. My guess was an addiction issue. Either way, zero judgement, and hoping for the best for him.

This is sarcasm, right? McDavid’s contract would be easy to move at 16-18 million. People would make space. From McDavid’s side though, if he wants to win with a new team, he doesn’t want the new team to give up assets for him that could be used in other trades.

With Kampf, I’m surprised no other team wants him. There is a ton of cap space around the league and though I don’t know all the 4th line centers around the league, I feel like he has to be better than a chunk of them

Was that me in goal? The weird thing last year was that as far as I could tell, he looked normal. His shot just went in 1/2 as much. Of course, if that was an NHL goalie he was shooting on, then there is room for optimism.

Carolina did have a few losses on defense - Orlov and Burns (not sure how good they were last year). And Jordan Staal continues to age.

The meta-point here is that the leafs got really lucky to get Matthews (and Nylander, Marner) but then got really unlucky that they were not able to benefit from a rising cap environment from 2020-2025 when the core-N were locked in. The flat cap could have been the difference in all those...

The other way to go is to say that maybe the Leafs were the 2nd best team in the east given how the Panthers destroyed Tampa and Carolina. Keep the band together if there is no way to improve it with UFAs.
